Schultz Calls on Ellison to Reject Special Prosecutor Role for Line 3 Protestors

PLYMOUTH, Minn. – July 26, 2022 Today, Jim Schultz, the Republican-endorsed candidate for Minnesota Attorney General, is calling on Attorney General Keith Ellison to publicly reject the request to be appointed special prosecutor on cases involving Line 3 protestors. As the more than 900 people who were arrested during the protests are being held accountable via the judicial process, the protestors are asking Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to appoint Ellison as a special prosecutor for “the most egregious cases.” In a letter to Ellison today, Schultz said Ellison must reject the request and instead support local prosecutors and members of law enforcement who are working to hold people accountable for their actions.

“Hundreds of people were arrested during violent protests that attempted to stop work to replace the Enbridge Line 3 pipeline. Now these protestors—many of whom are associated with Honor the Earth and left-wing extremist Winona LaDuke—are requesting Keith Ellison be appointed special prosecutor in the ‘most egregious cases,’ clearly in hopes of increasing their chances of having their criminal charges reduced or dropped. Keith Ellison must publicly reject this request and instead support local prosecutors and members of law enforcement who are working to hold people accountable for their actions,” said Schultz.

“With the significance and severity of what has happened, Minnesotans deserve to know if Keith Ellison will stand with law enforcement to uphold the rule of law and hold individuals accountable or, on the contrary, believes violent protests are acceptable and stand with individuals charged with violent crime,” concluded Schultz.
